Sexual violence on college campuses 

 

  • 11.2% of all graduate and undergraduate students experience rape or sexual assault on campus

  • 13% of all graduate and undergraduate students experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. 

  • Male college students, between the ages of 18 to 24, are 78% more likely to be a victim of rape or sexual assault, compared to non-students of the same age.

  • Since entering college, 5.8% of students have experienced stalking

  • Rates of sexual assault experienced by undergraduate students on campus

    • 26.4% of females

    • 6.8% of males 

  • Rates of sexual assault experienced by graduate students on campus

    • 9.7% of females 

    • 2.5% of males experience 

  • Notably, female students file reports of sexual assault at a lower rate than nonstudent females, despite female students experiencing more assaults, indicating that attitudes towards law enforcement play a large role in victims’ decisions to report their assault. 

    • 20% of female students, between the ages of 18 to 24, report on campus sexual assaults to law enforcement

    • 32% nonstudent females of the same age report sexual assault to law enforcement

Title IX

  • Title IX is a law which prevents discrimination on the basis of sex in educational institutions that receive financial assistance from the federal government. 

  • Title IX states:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”​​

  • Some recent changes to Title IX made in August 2020:

    • Schools are mandated to offer both parties an appeal for responsibility. 

    • Schools are obligated to respond with more supportive measures to victims and perpetrators.

    • Narrowed the definition of sexual assault.

    • Schools are not obligated to investigate assaults that occur off campus.
